Malware Breaks All Records in Q1 2014
Staggering numbers of new samples appearing daily.
If it feels like threats are snowballing out there, it’s not your gut deceiving you: malware creation has broken all records during the first quarter of the year, with a figure of more than 15 million new samples appearing for the period, and more than 160,000 new samples appearing every day.
Panda Security’s PandaLabs quarterly report for Q1 2014 has concluded that trojans are still the most abundant type of new malware, accounting for 71.85% of new samples created during Q1. Trojans are followed by worms, at 12.25%, and viruses, at 10.45%.
So far in 2014, trojans are still the malware most commonly used by cybercriminals to infect users. According to data from PandaLabs, four out of five infections around the world were caused by trojans, which translates to 79.90% of the total. Viruses are in second place, accounting for 6.71% of infections, followed by worms, with a ratio of 6.06%.
Unsurprisingly, in the area of mobile devices, there have been increasing attacks on Android environments. The firm noted that many of these involve subscribing users to premium-rate SMS services without the victims’ knowledge, both through Google Play as well as ads on Facebook, using WhatsApp as bait.

SMC 4.0: Mobile Encryption, Integrated Security and User-Centricity
SMC 4.0 provides a simple, hassle-free and comprehensive approach to protecting mobile devices. With Mobile Content Management for iOS devices, SMC is the only EMM solution to offer file-level encryption, which gates access to each file, to protect the data in the office and on the go. SMC also delivers integrated security against malware and malicious web sites for Android devices, which account for 80 percent of smartphone operating systems* worldwide as well as the majority of mobile malware threats. Sophos Survey: Mobile Security in a Cloudy World
Sophos conducted a survey of more than 725 IT professionals on their use and preferences of cloud share services, encryption and mobile devices. The survey showed 84 percent of organizations allow some level of access from company-issued devices to cloud-based file share services such as Dropbox, however 65 percent of respondents do not currently encrypt data between the cloud and mobile devices. Kaspersky Lab scores highest in all three categories of Q1 Dennis Technology Labs Anti-Malware Tests
Kaspersky Lab is pleased to announce that the company’s products received the highest AAA rating in all three of Dennis Technology Labs’ test categories – Home Anti-Virus Protection, Small Business Anti-Virus Protection and Enterprise Anti-Virus Protection – in the first quarter of 2014.
Testing by Dennis Technology Labs takes place in a specially created lab, assessing the capabilities of various antivirus solutions in conditions that are as realistic as possible. Testing involves an analysis of how the products react to the very latest live threats. Two aspects were assessed in all three categories: Protection Rating, which showed how well the products handled malware, and Legitimate Software Rating, which showed how effectively they handled non-malicious programs. The ideal anti-malware suite was expected to block all threats and allow all legitimate programs. Products scored points for successfully blocking threats, but lost points for any false positives. The overall scores were converted into one of the following ratings: AAA, AA, A or B.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 was the top performer in the Home Anti-Virus Protection category, correctly identifying all the legitimate programs, blocking 98% of the malware and neutralizing the remaining 2%. The Kaspersky Lab solution received the highest number of points of all the participants and was awarded an AAA rating.
In the Small Business Anti-Virus Protection category Kaspersky Small Office Security also failed to trigger a single false positive, blocking 94% of threats and neutralizing another 5% – a performance that resulted in another AAA rating.
Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business also turned in an excellent performance in the Enterprise Anti-Virus Protection category, blocking 94% of threats and neutralizing another 3% to earn yet another AAA rating for Kaspersky Lab.
